Once you’re through the tutorial, the basic structure of the game works as follows. It is this premise that serves as the justification for a roguelike romp through gloomy caverns fighting deadly RPG battles with an expendable crew of weirdos. That’s Darkest Dungeon in a nutshell, at least from a narrative standpoint. And now imagine that horrors beyond all comprehension wrecked the mansion and all the surroundings, leaving you – the final scion of the noble house – responsible for teaming up with the nastiest adventurers this side of Dark Souls in order to get your stuff back. Now imagine that mansion was close to a cave where a bunch of dudes who read too much Lovecraft were hanging out. Imagine a nice mansion owned by a rich asshole. Today I thought I would share my initial impressions of the game, based on 9-ish in-game weeks including a few short-and-medium length adventures as well as one boss defeated.įor those who (like me for the last eight years) have not delved into the sticky underbelly of Darkest Dungeon, let’s go over the basics.
Like with pretty much everything else in pop culture I am a good eight years behind the curve, but don’t worry! I’m catching up slowly but surely on the joys of crawling through dusty catacombs filled with eldritch horrors alongside the moistest, grimiest dudes you’ve ever seen. Hey adventurers, are you eager to hear some hard-hitting analysis of the new features and mechanics in Darkest Dungeon 2 now that it’s out of early access? Well I don’t have that, because I just started playing the first Darkest Dungeon game only last weekend.
